Is this a real rule? I have no idea, so let’s ask Google…
So, when I Googled the “3 book rule”, turns out there are some other people like us on the internet who also understand, and have experience, with the secret tool for not only enjoying reading more but staying consistent with it.
And no matter how much you love reading or the idea of reading…
It can get boring.
Or maybe redundant, lackluster, meh, you get it…
But, that doesn’t mean the book itself is a drag or that you’re simply not “a reader”.
It may just mean that you need a rotation of books available to you…
For example, I always have these 3 types of books in my rotation:
- Fiction
- Non-fiction (like a memoir or something educational)
- Personal Interest (wellness, screenwriting, etc.)
I do this for these 5 reasons:
- I Need a Breather
If I’ve got a lengthy, heavy fiction book, sometimes it’s nice to come up for air and read something on the lighter side.
I love a good meaty story filled with twists and turns and depth and something to sink my teeth, and reality, into, but it can be dense and sometimes depressing…
2. I Want To Savour The Story
Sometimes, I find a book that I simply refuse to finish.
I just won’t, I have to savour every single word, sentence, and chapter for as long as I can, which is exactly why I have two backups to enjoy at the same time.
3. Keeps Things Exciting
Reading is not Formula 1…
It’s not the most physically thrilling activity in the world, but that’s not why we do it.
We read to stimulate our minds, entertain our imaginations, and transport into different worlds…which is thrilling in its own way.
But, if you’re anything like me and enjoy exploring and learning different things at once, then having 3 books in your rotation is a great way to keep on reading.
4. I Get Through My Book List Faster
Do you ever start a book or get halfway through, but then start dreaming about the next book on your list and get restless with the one you’re reading?
Well, it’s totally okay to put the one you’re reading down for a while and start something new at the same time.
Then, maybe in a few days or at some point, you’ll want to go back to the first book and jump into it.
You then get to read at least 3 books every month and keep working through your list…
5. It’s Cool
Okay, I have to admit…
The fifth reason is just because it’s very cool to be reading 3 books at a time.
I mean, it is!
Right off the bat, you’re definitely reading and allowing stories and ideas to flow through your imagination more than the average individual who doesn’t indulge in reading as frequently…
But it’s also an awesome conversation starter when you have so much to say about different authors and their books, their writing style, the worlds they create, how they compare to other books in that genre, etc.
Reading is cool, and anyone who tells you otherwise clearly hasn’t picked up a book in the last 10 years.
P.S. Did you know Boulder, CO is one of the most beautifully ideal cities to be able to sit outside and read?
It’s true, ask anyone.
Did you also know that the best thing to do after a reading session outside is to get lunch?
I know, so wild.
Well, if you’re ever in Boulder (which you should be) for fun or visiting a friend, make sure you stop by one of my favorite Moroccan/Spanish-inspired restaurants…
You can get all the information right here where I go into detail about the menu, the environment, and more.
